Abstract

Cognitive learning theory is a learning approach that emphasizes the individual's mental process in understanding and processing information. The problem in this research is that there are still many learning practices that are only result-oriented and do not pay attention to the student's thinking process. This causes low critical thinking ability and deep understanding of students towards the learning material. This research aims to examine the basic concepts of cognitive learning theory, the figures who play a role in its development, and its implications in improving the quality of learning. The method used is library research by analyzing various sources of literature that are relevant to cognitive learning theory. The research results show that cognitive learning theory views learning as an active process that involves aspects of thinking, understanding, remembering, and solving problems. Figures such as Piaget, Vygotsky, and Bruner emphasize the importance of developmental stages, social interaction, and discovery-based learning. The application of this theory in learning is proven to be able to improve critical thinking skills, creativity, and meaningful learning for learners. In conclusion, cognitive learning theory gives a significant contribution in improving the quality of learning by placing learners as active subjects. Therefore, teachers need to develop student-centered learning strategies by paying attention to the cognitive structure, learning experience, and social environment of learners.
